Μελομακάρονα (Melomakárona)

“Akrivi’s Christmas Cookies”

This is a fun Greek honey cookie recipe from a cookbook I was gifted for my birthday. Recipe is taken from Feasting & Fasting in Crete by Diana Farr Louis. From what I am told and from what is written in the book, melomakárona are a very classic Christmas cookie that are common across households during the holidays. I opt out of a walnut filling and just use chopped walnuts on their own as the topper.

Ingredients

Dough
450 g (3-4 cups) all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
240 mL (1 cup) olive oil (a higher quality olive oil pays off in this recipe)
50 g (1/4 cup) sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda diluted in
120 mL (1/2 cup) freshly squeezed orange juice
60 mL (1/4 cup) brandy (Metaxa is my go-to)
grated peel of one lemon (or one orange)
Honey glaze
150 g (3/4 cup) sugar
120 mL (1/2 cup) water
